The Quiet World by Jeffrey McDaniel
In an effort to get people to look
into each other’s eyes more,
and also to appease the mutes,
the government has decided
to allot each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.
When the phone rings, I put it to my ear
without saying hello. In the restaurant
I point at chicken noodle soup.
I am adjusting well to the new way.
Late at night, I call my long distance...

The light in my room keeps going out. Maybe it’s keeping me from getting too comfortable here in my room.
My ceilings are pretty high. No (chair) + (person available) sum to reach the light bulb. Solution: me plus one, have to move the bulky dinning room table down the narrow hallway, flip it around and then on its side to get it around the corner and then into my room. This has been done...
Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

things about kaohsiung
- When there is an emergency vehicle coming down the road, nobody pulls aside to let it pass
- the garbage system: Every night there is a garbage truck that comes down the road playing a loud melancholy carnival/merry-go-round-like theme song. When residents here it, they come out to put their trash in the back.

Kaohsiung has shorts-wearing conducive weather.
i can wear shorts all the time. in the rain, in the night, in the morning, inside, outside, during a typhoon.
this, unfortunately, has compromised my defense against mosquitoes, handicapped with 43% more exposed surface area for landing.
But, they can’t follow me home because i live on the 13th floor…too high of an altitude for them to...

dogs are scooter-trained.
many people travel by scooter. many people have dogs and like to bring them along.
a common site: 2 people on a scooter with a dog at the driver’s feet or in the lap of the passenger.
advertisements for dog: house-trained, scooter-trained
(apt mate wants to get a dog… i don’t know if i can handle that yet…@kara)

there is no need to take a detour if there is construction going on.
example:
the stairs to the overpass are blocked off with yellow tape and orange barricades. my roomate and i needed to cross the overpass to buy food, tea, paint, and other such goods located on the other side.
day 1: walk under the tape and walk over the overpass.
day 2: someone has turned one of the...
Another funny proof: Hell has frozen over
The following is allegedly an actual question given in a University of Washington chemistry mid-term exam.
Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we...
